Get Your Knit ON – The Rain Shadow Shawl is LIVE

Find Rain Shadow on Ravelry or on Etsy, whichever you prefer to shop!

I have been working on a year long Blanket Square project.  Threads of Colour – a Year in Squares, each month a different square in a different stitch pattern and each month a “fancy”, a little extra something.

The April Square featured this stitch and once knit, I couldn’t stop thinking about making it up as a shawl.  This is the result.

Rain Shadow shawl is a classic top-down triangular shawl with a twist.  The Rain Shadow pattern is a ribbing pattern, with YO and bead details.  The ribbing pattern and garter st details make the shawl totally reversible.  As well, the pattern is mirrored from one side to the other giving extra movement to the lines of the rib.  The shawl as shown has been beaded with size 6/0 beads.  The beads are optional.

Almost classic – the increases along the sides and center line are a little faster than the average triangle shaping.  There are six increases in every 10 rows of pattern.

Rain Shadow is both written and charted.

The yarn is Soft Silk, by BC Garn. A gorgeously blue bourette silk. And the beads are 6/0 beads by Miyuki.

    The Wool Room …

    … needs organization!

This is where it started, beautiful, clean, and empty!

    A lot of organization.

On the up side to all of this – the storage locker is empty!

What kind of organization do you use for your stash – yarn, fabric, any kind of needle craft! Are you a neat and tidy type – or more on the disorganization side of thing. Right now I am strictly disorganized!

I am working on changing that. It is a slow process because knitting is still my priority. I will keep you up to date on my successes and failures!

Like the small stacks of boxes in every room that I am slowly going through! Now that I have time to open and check them. We have taken stacks of boxes to recycle places, the dump and book sales. I have donated some yarn to my daughters stash. So the cull is ongoing and closer to almost complete as opposed to just starting.

We love our new space already. I will show pictures as we clear and tidy each space!

And I am knitting up a storm or two!

    Happy Knitting

    Another Possible Class Project

Would you like to learn how to knit a tea cozy like this?

I love to knit tea cozies.

This is a different yarn from the usual. Ray Gentleman, whom I work with, challenged, suggested, put an idea out there about creating a West Coast Cozy with the Prairie Sea Fusion from Custom Woolen Mills.

The idea stuck in my head and I had to knit it out!

So, if you take the class you will make this charmer of a cozy. You will also learn how to strand the yarn in the proper way for a West Coast knit. Oh and look at that fringe! Learn how to finish the cozy with the fringe on top…

This is The Dancer Cozy. I am quite enamoured with it.

A few years ago I started designing with the Cowichan style of wools. Nowadays that includes Briggs and Little Country Roving, Prairie Wool and Prairie Sea Fusion by Custom Woolen Mills. At the store we were always being asked for the Cowichan patterns, which were really the old White Buffalo and Mary Maxim patterns, not the true West Coast patterns. Those are the intellectual property of the original knitters.

I try to create patterns respectful of the past and the present motifs of the West Coast. They reflect my lifetime of living, mostly on the Coast but also in northern Canada and Malaysia. The OOkpik childs set is based on a childhood memory, a small stuffed snowy owl that my father had given me, named OOkpik. I designed and knit that set for my Grandson. The Standing Tall Gauntlets are based on memories of the gauntlets I wore when living in Northern Manitoba. You needed that extra heavy layer over the basic mittens or gloves – it was cold up there!

The Dancer Cozy reminds of both the Button Blanket dances of the West Coast and the Shadow Puppets of the Malaysian Peninsula. The shapes are both stylized and simplified, taken right down to suggestion and imagination.

The Spirit Bear will be my next sweater pattern release in the Salish Sea Collection.

So much inspiration, never enough time! I love where I live!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • A Little Summer Entertainment

    A Little Summer Entertainment

I have been a fan of Kate Davies ever since I first discovered her patterns and books! I love her sense of style and secretly covet every piece of her wardrobe! Her sense of style resonates with me. Over the years I have participated in several clubs, collected, yes collected with no real purpose in mind, multiple balls of her yarns, especially the Milarrochy Tweed, and have a significant stash of her books.

So when she started advertising her new club I was immediately interested!

    Summer of Mystery Club

Seriously, how could I not join? Books, with a new to me Mystery writer, essays, conversations and knitting and a Mystery KAL if you want to knit along with it. Something to think about and look forward too after a long winter. The Mystery writer is one of the Vintage queens of the Mystery genre, Margery Allingham. The themes or inspiration for the patterns, including the MKAL and essays will be taken from the time period of Margary Allingham’s writing career, from the 1920’s through to the 50’s.

I love vintage patterns. Kates’ designs will be vintage inspired, but with her own little twists. I also love to read mysteries and have never read any Margery Allingham! But I am so looking forward to discovering her books!

The yarn Kate will be using for the designs is her Milarrochy Tweed, which is one of my personal favourites – wool and mohair blended with tweed flecks spun into the mix. This creates a beautiful yarn with body, a slight halo and colour combinations galore, thanks to the tweed flecks!

The KDD forum on Ravelry already has three very active threads going, all about this particular club. I am really enjoying it all. Tracking down the books, playing with my yarn and anticipating what I may want to purchase (OK, I don’t need any more yarn. I have already put together 2 possible options for the Mystery KAL. But you never know what might jump into my shopping cart!).

Option 1 :Lochan, Smirr, Garth, Stockiemuir, and for pop Foxglove.

Option 2: Bruce, Hirst, Backen’, Asphodel and for pop, Ardnamurchan.

I am thinking of trying a couple of other swatches as well. The first swatch is easy and may end up being what I knit, but it is too easy – I wear all of those colours and I am begining to think that it will look like everything else in my wardrobe. I think the second is my favourite so far, is is closer to the colours of the time period and possible moodiness to the novels – but there is something not quite right.

While starting my collection of books I learned a valuable lesson. On-line book stores also sell postcards. Vintage stock, that look exactly like a book and were just as expensive! So I am now the proud owner of a Vintage Postcard! It will become my place holder for the Mystery MKAL! The Goff Place Mystery KAL.

    Happy Knitting
